March 15

Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park Showers are forecast for Sunday in Pleasanton, so come prepared! This hike is about half under trees, and about half in the open, and the route can be altered or shortened depending on the weather. Climb 1000' over two miles up the Courdet Trail past giant oak, bay, and sycamore groves to the ridge. Hike along the ridge, and then loop back through Kilkare Canyon. Views of Livermore Valley and Altamont Pass to the east, Diablo and Sunol Parks to the north and south, and a hidden canyon to the west. Hike is about 8-9 miles, 1500' elevation gain. On Wednesday I saw some spring wildflowers in the meadows - red maids, blue-eyed grass, blue dicks, popcorn flower, and more. Please note that we are hiking from the recently opened Castleridge Trailhead, NOT the main Pleasanton Ridge entrance. Directions: From 680N take exit 26, Bernal Ave, toward Pleasanton. Turn left on Bernal Ave, then right on Foothill Rd. After 0.7 miles take a sharp left on Old Foothill Rd, which is one-way going south (don't be confused that you will have passed the exit of Old Foothill back to Foothill a few tenths of a mile back). Stay left on Old Foothill and park along the street. If the street spaces are full there are more spaces just a bit further on Old Foothill by the Alviso Adobe. Carpool 8:45 from lot next to Hobee's, 800 W. Ahwanee Ave, Sunnyvale or meet at the restrooms by the Castleridge Trailhead sign to begin hiking at 9:30. Organizer: Cathy Howard howardc414@gmail.com
